Meryl Streep is one of the most recognized actresses in Hollywood, who is able to captivate audiences by the drama she is able to bring to the big screen, however, the drama this time isn’t on the screen but it might be happening in her closet.
The 2017 Oscars is just a few days away and the actress is again a nominee, making it her 20th time. It is being reported by E! News that Chanel creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, has commented that she has left one of their gowns behind due to money.
Lagerfeld’s alleges that Streep had her sights set on an embroidered gray silk gown that is a part Chanel’s most recent collection and planned to wear it during the Oscars this Sunday. However, Streep did have one request, she wanted the neckline to be higher, so of course, Chanel’s camp went back to the drawing board to make that happen for her.
In a phone interview with WWD, Lagerfeld stated, “I made a sketch, and we started to make the dress.”
According to Lagerfeld, a few days passed and a call came through from someone on Streep’s team who said, “‘Don’t continue the dress. We found somebody who will pay us.”
Lagerfeld is now blaming Chanel’s refusal to pay for Streep’s sudden change of mind. “After we gift her a dress that’s 100,000 euros [$105,000], we found later we had to pay [for her to wear it]. We give them dresses, we make the dresses, but we don’t pay. A genius actress, but cheapness also, no?”
Streep’s camp is denying the allegations being made by Lagerfeld. A rep made a statement to E! News, “This is a completely untrue story. Ms. Streep would NEVER wear anything in exchange for payment.”
