Casey won the prestigious award, Best Actor, during the 2017 Oscars, for his role in Manchester by the Sea. During his acceptance speech, however, Affleck appears to forgotten to mention his two children as he ran down his list of people to thank.
While backstage, he addressed it with reporters, “I didn’t thank my children, which is something that I’ll probably never ever live down. About three seconds after I made it backstage, my phone rang and my son said, ‘You didn’t even mention us.’ And my heart just sank. So, you know, that probably would have been the most meaningful thing I could have said and I failed.”
During the acceptance speech, that actor did take the time to thank his parents, brother and fellow actor Ben Affleck, the co-producer Matt Damon, screenwriter and director Kenneth Lonergan and friends. He even took time out to thank Denzel Washington, who was also nominated for Best Actor, who he had just met that night.
Casey also stated, “I wasn’t sure if he was just…I saw those tears and I thought maybe I’m just not making a good speech and he was really disappointed. But I think he was probably touched, and I think that we are — I mean, not to brag or anything, but I think we’re the only two brothers to win Academy Awards, ever.”
This wasn’t the first time that Casey made headlines for excluding someone from his acceptance speech. He made headlines when he forgot to thank his brother Ben during his acceptance speech for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama during the 2017 Golden Globes for his role in Manchester by the Sea.
To that situation, he told Giuliana Rancic with E! News, “I was sort of just curious as to what I was supposed to be thanking him for. Maybe he thought he was involved in the movie, but he wasn’t. There’s a lot of things to thank Ben for, but standing at the Golden Globes was not the moment to do it since he wasn’t involved in the movie.”
