This is not a spoof story or a sensational headline from the National Enquirer. It is being reported by a hospital in Spain that a woman who is 64-years-old, recently gave birth to twins.
Hospital Recoletas Burgos, located in Burgos, Spain, has released a statement saying that the 64-year old woman has given birth via C-section to a healthy boy and girl, the mother is also in great health.
The woman is at the moment only being identified by her initials. She has experienced IVF treatments while in the United States.
It is being reported that this isn’t the first time the woman has given birth at that hospital. The woman first gave birth at the age of 58.
It is rare to be fertile over the age of 50, however, that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 600 babies were birthed by women who are between the age of 50 and 54 years old back in 2012.
Just take a look at celebrities who are having their first child at the age of 50 or older, Janet Jackson is a prime example that had her first child at the age of 50.
Fertility treatments have allowed older women to still experience motherhood, but they also have to be aware that there are risks not only for the birth but also for the post-birth as well.
The vice chairman for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University Medical Center, Dr. Mark Sauer, said, “What never gets picked up in these stories … is there’s a lot of women doing this stuff that doesn’t work for them. They don’t get pregnant, or they miscarry, or God forbid, they have a disabled child, and now they’re maybe 50, 55, and they’ve got to deal with it. They have to be prepared for that.”
